Allen Mallach's Thoughts on Improving Detroit

Since we are getting ready to start our next book written by Alan Mallach, I though it might be interesting to read this interview with him on how to improve Detroit. Since Professor McKinney mentioned Mallach is the expert on the housing crisis, I am enlightened by the feedback he gave on Detroit.

  1. This article was quite enlightening and I am looking forward to a class discussion on this topic. Detroit still has some much potential and with a push in the right direction and sectoral diversification away from the auto industry. Our generation can and will see a thriving metropolis and city of Detroit.

  2. You're right. This article is very interesting, and I kept wondering about who will help revitalize the City of Detroit. You know, it's not really safe there in the City of Detroit, and I bet many people will be less interested in helping revitalize the city because they will be thinking about a couple of things: 1) safety (will there be enough police officers to guarantee their safety?) 2) money? (who's paying the workers?) 3) What are the long term benefits? (If we revitalize it, then for how long will it say that way? We know that there is a bad community in the City of Detroit, and they might not care about how clean or great the renovations are... We first need to help the community and change their lifestyle before we do anything to revitalize the City of Detroit. Just a thought.

  3. $9,000 homes are pretty ridiculous...if we can turn this city around, one could make a killing in real estate without much risk factor.
