Find your walk-score and transit-score

I found a really neat website. You input an address and it determines how well that location is served by public transportation, and how walkable it is. In addition to a scale of 1-100, it rates locations from car-dependent to very walkable. It's frightening, but not surprising, to note that my parent's house in Troy, a suburb in Metro Detroit, rated 6/100 for being walkable -- kind of fun to play around with.

  1. My house in Minneapolis is a 60/100 for walk-ability compared to Kalamazoo of 62/100

  2. My house in Ann Arbor was only rated "somewhat walkable" (65/100), which was kind of surprising to me because Ann Arbor is really big on being a pedestrian- and bike-friendly city. My house is only about a mile from downtown and U of M's campus.

  3. My home in Dearborn, MI was also rated somewhat walkable, 62/100. I think this is pretty accurate, I drive pretty much every where I need to go.

  5. I was a little surprised when I compared my neighborhood in Kalamazoo to my neighborhood in Seattle. The Stuart neighborhood in Kzoo rates a 71/100 (compared to the city as a whole at 52/100). At home my neighborhood was a 64/100 compared to the city as a whole at 72/100.

I just thought this was interesting because my neighborhood at home has far more amenities within walking distance as compared to Stuart. The Stuart neighborhood is primarily residential, which is great for walking to friend's houses, but if I need to get to a grocery store or pharmacy I still have to drive.

  6. Had the best time with this website, haha, inputting every address I can think of.

    Home: 3 (knew it)
    my Catherine St LLH: 60
    a grove LLH: 69
my LLH seems a lot closer to downtown and west main than the grove, I found that difference odd.

  7. I live in a small rural community in Oakland County. My communities’ score was 11 out of 100 and car dependent. This did not surprise me, 95% of our school district is bused.

  8. my walk score for Kalamazoo was 68, but my one for my house back in Massachusetts was 3... I do not live in a neighborhood or city that has much in it.

  9. How about a 2/100 for my house in Virginia? And 3 for my old house in Rochester MI...never really noticed it though, just had to drive a couple miles to go downtown.

  10. 63 walkable at my house in Holland! I was surprised but looking at everything it says I can walk to, I guess my neighborhood is rather close to downtown. This is a great site, thanks for sharing!

  11. Never expected that this website would cover other countries too. Had a lot of fun checking out the score of my house in Pakistan which had a walk score of 28/100 versus Kalamazoo college's score of 72/100. Very surprising because I find the place I live in Pakistan very walkable and every amenity is within a 2 minute walk literally ! On the other hand Kalamazoo College doesn't seem very walkable to me. Maybe its just that I am acquainted with the place back home and Kalamazoo is new to me .

  12. my score for Kalamazoo was 89. My score for my house back in Nepal was 48. I think this is accurate because I had to use public transport wherever I need to go.
