An interesting use of NSP funding, in our own backyard.

  1. I think this is a great idea because it gives an incentive for officers to move back to the city, and at the same time this program uses houses that were previously foreclosed and creates a safer community. William Booker-Riggs says it the best at the end of the article when he claims he would not have been able to afford one of these homes before because of the economy.

  2. I agree that this is a good idea. We all know that one of the biggest problems in Detroit is crime. The crime levels in Detroit are driving away not only homeowners, but even people who might previously have frequented many of the businesses, restaurants, and entertainment venues in the city. Bringing more police officers back into the city would fix this problem, and this plan will also stimulate the local housing market by reducing the number of vacant and/or abandoned homes in Detroit.

  3. Definitely a great idea! People will respect the officers a lot more if they are living in their neighborhoods. It will help to lessen the gap between the police force and the community which I think will be positive for sure.

  4. This is great! I definitely enjoy reading this article, and I see potential in working together with the police officers in order to improve the community. If one loves the community, then one will fight for it, despite the current problems it has.

  5. We are seeing creative alternatives for what to do with the foreclosure crisis. By having officers live in these homes the neighborhood is safer, if not realistically then a sense of safety is created. Also, a negative externalization is avoided with crime pervasiveness.

  6. Why not. Officers should live in the communities that they protect to ensure a quality service. If the level of protection applies to the officer and their family, the likelyhood that they will allow an area to deteriorate is sharply reduced.

  7. Great idea! I'd love to see officers come back to the city. So many left when they were allowed to leave the in 1999.
