Abandon Building are Opportunities Waiting to Happen

Here is a video that I found on former abandoned buildings being transformed into useful space.

The video is a little cheesy, but I thought it was nice to actually see successful rehabilitation of different types of buildings. We have spent so much time focusing on the problem, I think it is a nice change of pace to start looking at solutions and success.

How do you feel about the video? Did you find any connection between the video and the material that we are reading in class?

  1. This is a very good picture of what can be done when these programs work. Projects like these are all over Michigan as well. Many cities are trying to reclaim waterfront that was utilized before regional manufacturing lost out to national companies. This allows for new waterfront developments.

  2. Definitely, you're right, Liz. It was really nice to see the "extreme makeover" thing for the houses/buildings. It helps to develop a better atmosphere in the community.

  3. I like to see these types of solutions and successes. As for comparisons with the book. I think there are many solutions shown in the video and provided in the book, however they are sometimes very complicated and the solutions take up a lot of time to complete.

  4. I really like seeing these abandoned buildings being fixed up and made into something useful. I think it is important to get a picture of some of the successes that have come from such a terrible problem. This will help us continue on in our mission to solving the abandonment problem, and figuing out ways to make these buildings useful again.
