Future Jobs

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/made-america-comeback-125318772.html

Here is a video about future jobs in manufacturing. I found it interesting in how it related to our reading on the Great Lakes Region, and our class discussions.

What do you think about the video? What connections did you make to what we discussed in class or read? And most importantly, do you think the guy talking is wearing a wig?

  1. Interesting. I see a connection to the huge transport ships Professor McKinney showed us in class. He says the companies that will be advantaged will be the electronic industry, automotive parts industry, and appliance manufactures. These items are too large to fit thousands in a crate. Transportation costs and the rise of labor costs make it easier to do business at home.

  2. All I care is that we have manufacturing jobs here rather than overseas. This will help curb unemployment.

  3. Paul great point, we need more local jobs in all industries, and if this is a way of creating jobs than thats great. And about the wig question, he definitely has one on haha.

  4. I agree with mark and paul in that it is time to think of any and all ways to create jobs in this region as unemployment is very high.

  5. One of the articles we had to read for this week stressed that manufacturing jobs are not growing as quickly as other industries. This is great that manufacturing is coming back to the United States, although I don't think the manufacturing industry is going to 'fix' our economy, and sending jobs overseas isn't going to stop anytime soon.

Can we watch this in class and see what everyone thinks about it? I think it could make for a good discussion.

  7. Manufacturing is not an industry we want to depend on to bring us back, it will only become more mechanized and cheaper to send overseas as more time goes by... It's nice to have for short term local industry, but it is not a long term solution to anything.

  8. Manufacturing company are being less human-labor intensive. We need industry where labor is more used so that unemployment rate goes down.
