Abandoned Property

Today I drove by an abandoned house on the North side of Kalamazoo. The windows were boarded up and the grass was almost as high as the windows on the first floor. I wondered how long it had been like that and how long it had been providing nothing to society except decreasing the value of the entire surrounding area. I am not used to seeing houses like that.

  1. I wonder what kind of programs (like the ones in the readings from this week) that the city of Kalamazoo uses to prevent this from happening. The readings presented a lot of good ideas/strategies for reusing abandoned buildings and making the neighborhood better than it was before.

  2. I've seen many houses like this and even a house that has almost completely rotted away from being abandoned for such a long time. its sad to see beautiful, livable houses just sit and waste away when there are so many people in need of a home.

  3. This is a shame, its sad to see houses in this type of condition. I feel like the government should take charge and make the house look more appealing so the whole neighborhood doesnt suffer. I feel sick to my stomach when I see some of the abandoned houses I've seen, it makes me want to go home get my lawn mower, cutters, and paint and go to work.

  4. R.T.Yewah, who do you think would be paying for the governmental intervention? I believe a tax raise to pay for this would just put people in worse shape. This is why nonprofit organizations such as HFH are so rewarding.
