Accommodating Automobiles

Here is a short article about the issues that arise when a city focuses too much of its resources on automobile accommodation. Not only does it leave many parking lots scattered around the city, but it creates equity problems because cars are not universally accessible to youth, people with lower incomes, or those with disabilities.

  1. This is a problem in Los Angeles also. Where the urban sprawl has made most forms of public transit a a nightmare. In a city like LA, if you don't have a car you are out of luck.

  2. Places like New York City will not have this problem because not many people own automobiles there. Its either you take public transportation or use a taxi. Detroit on the other hand is the automobile capital of the world and people in the Detroit area own cars. You don't see public transportation besides buses. We should accommodate automobiles because that is still our main source of transportation today.

  3. Although we must accept automobiles because they are our main source of transportation, we must also push for change in the way we think about transportation. Public transit works so well in urban cities because everything is compact and close together. Using Europe as an example and from the movie we watch on Portland, Oregon in class, cities should consider more public transportation that will help "green" up our cities and push towards a more utopian city.
