Here is an article discussing Michigan's natural gas reserves and the role that fracking will play in Michigan's recovery.

  1. I had never heard of 'fracking' before I read this article. It is very interesting and presents a great opportunity to improve Michigan's economy as well as its operating efficiency, especially as the price of oil continues to increase. However, even though the state offers companies access to a large water supply, the regulations that have been implemented do not seem to help prevent the dangers posed by the chemicals used and the depths companies are able to dig. By making the companies record each job's information, such as the chemicals (many containing carcinogens) and amount of water used, along with how deep they dig, it will only help respond after problems arise (and that is only if the companies are honest and accurate). Michigan's large water supply can be very advantageous, but it can also mean greater consequences if contamination occurs. Fracking practices have been safe since the 1960s, but as companies look to push further and further, hopefully the state is careful and does not let greed take over.
